Keep Your Pets Safe from Poisonous Plants.

Prevention is the best way to ensure that your pet is happy and healthy. Take a look around your house for the following plants that are poisonous to animals:

Common House-Plants

If you happen to have one of the most common, yet toxic house-plants get rid of it. The Elephant’s Ear, sometimes called a ‘Mother-in-Law Plant’, is poisonous for both dogs and cats. This pink and green speckled foliage can cause swelling of the mouth and tongue, creating difficulty swallowing and breathing. Contact a veterinary right away if your pet has eaten part of this plant.

Holiday Foliage

Holiday plants like poinsettia, mistletoe, and holly are toxic for pets. Poinsettia always has had the reputation of being extremely poisonous, but the side-effects are quite mild, causing skin irritation and nausea in dogs and cats. However, holly and mistletoe can cause tachycardia and hypotension, making them potentially deadly for your pets.

Spring Blooms

All your favorite spring flowers, daffodils, tulips, and hyacinths are toxic for pets, especially the bulb itself. The flowers can cause swelling of the mouth, difficulty breathing, and drooling, while the bulbs may cause respiratory distress and increased heart rate. This can be fatal if left untreated.

Bonsai Trees

Some Bonsai trees, particularly the Sago Palm, are toxic to both dogs and cats. The nut-like fruits are poisonous but so are the leaves, causing liver failure without prompt medical attention. You may notice dark fecal matter as a sign of toxicity. This is a very lethal plant, and pets die from Sago Palm poisoning in 50% of the cases.
