Caring for Your Pet This Winter

If you have a pet that spends any time outdoors, such as an indoor/outdoor cat or a dog, you'll want to take some additional precautions to keep your pet safe this winter. Dogs and cats should never be left outside for an extended period of time when temperatures are below freezing (32 degrees Fahrenheit); even though pets do have an extra layer of insulation with their fur, this is not enough to keep them warm in extreme temperatures. If it's too cold for you, it's likely too cold for your dog or cat.

If you decide to take your dog for walks in the winter, you might also consider investing in a sweater and/or boots for your dog to wear on walks, as snow and ice on the ground can be uncomfortable for your dog to walk on. Not all dogs will take to wearing boots well, but it is recommended that you at least try if your dog will be walking through snow or ice.

Finally, make sure your pet is up-to-date on all vaccinations this winter. Even though many viruses and parasites cannot survive in colder temperatures, some still can. You don't want to take any risks when it comes to your pet's health and wellness.
